Cervical Cancer Awareness: Prevention, Early Detection, and Support
Cervical cancer is a serious disease, but it is also highly preventable and treatable, especially when detected early. At The Chautauqua Center (TCC), we provide the resources and support our community needs to stay informed and take proactive steps toward cervical health.
Understanding Cervical Cancer
This type of cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. The cancer is primarily caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection.
Prevention and Early Detection
- HPV Vaccination: The HPV vaccine is highly effective in preventing the types of HPV that cause most cervical cancers. It is recommended for preteens, teens, and young adults.
- Regular Cervical Cancer Screenings:
- Pap tests look for abnormal cell changes in the cervix.
- HPV tests detect the presence of high-risk HPV strains.
- The frequency of screenings depends on individual risk factors and age.
How We at TCC Can Help
HPV Vaccinations: We offer the HPV vaccine to eligible individuals. Our healthcare providers can discuss the benefits and answer any questions you may have.

While colonoscopy is the most effective screening method, there are other options available. Please refer to accompanying chart to discuss with your physician the best screening option tailored to your health needs.
